Maia Sabeva
Maia Petrova Sabev, an icon painter and restorer, was born in Sofia (Bulgaria) on 29 October 1958. As a pupil and wife of Ilia Sabev, she has succeeded in realising the ideal she set herself, and in a way that perhaps event her own imagination could not have envisaged. Today, with the experience gained through the countless icons she has created, she can be considered, in this field, one of the world's finest practitioners, an artist who stands unrivalled. Her artistic journey has taken her to numerous exhibitions throughout Italy, where her work has been welcomed and appreciated above all by dioceses and parishes – places that, more than any others, recognise the spiritual authenticity embodied in each of her works. This journey reached its most significant peak when two of her icons found a home at Castel Gandolfo and in the Vatican offices: a distinction that few iconographers in the world can boast, and which testifies to the extent to which her art has been recognised at the highest levels of Christianity.
Her work has by no means been easy, given the specific subject matter to which she has devoted herself with unwavering commitment. In her works, the viewer is able to draw near to the supernatural almost spontaneously, and yet with a genuine, intimate spiritual joy. Ilia Sabev had found in his wife Maia not only a collaborator, but above all the inspiration for the icons he was to create. Maia Petrova Sabev, iconografa e restauratrice, è nata a Sofia (Bulgaria) il 29 ottobre 1958. Alunna e moglie di Ilia Sabev, è riuscita a raggiungere l'ideale che si era proposta, e in maniera tale che, forse, neppure la sua immaginazione poteva pensare. Oggi, con l'esperienza acquisita attraverso le innumerevoli icone da lei realizzate, Ella può considerarsi, in questo campo, una delle migliori interpreti al mondo, un'artista che non teme confronti. Il suo cammino artistico l'ha condotta in numerose mostre in tutta Italia, dove il suo lavoro è stato accolto e apprezzato soprattutto presso diocesi e parrocchie, luoghi che meglio di ogni altro sanno riconoscere l'autenticità spirituale racchiusa in ogni sua opera. Un percorso che ha raggiunto il suo apice più significativo quando due delle sue icone hanno trovato dimora a Castel Gandolfo e negli uffici del Vaticano: un riconoscimento che pochi iconografi al mondo possono vantare, e che testimonia quanto la sua arte sia stata riconosciuta ai più alti livelli della cristianità. Il suo lavoro non è stato per nulla facile, considerando la specifica tematica alla quale si è dedicata con costante impegno. Nelle sue opere l'osservatore riesce ad avvicinarsi al soprannaturale quasi con spontaneità, e, pure, con vera intima gioia spirituale. Ilia Sabev aveva trovato in sua moglie Maia non solo una collaboratrice, ma soprattutto l'ispiratrice delle icone da realizzare. Solo le personalità spirituali, dotate di un reale talento, sono chiamate a consacrarsi all'iconografia.
